CORONATION STREET star, Kym Marsh, has spoken out to defend Meghan Markle and Prince Harry who announced they were expecting a baby during Baby Loss Awareness Week. Last week, Kensington Palace confirmed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would be welcoming a bundle of joy into the world in the Spring.
Despite the happy news, some social media users criticised the timing as Meghan Markle’s pregnancy was announced on the last day of Baby Loss Awareness Week. The day, which falls on October 15, is called Wave of Light, where families across the world light a candle to remember all the babies who have died too soon.
One person wrote on Twitter: “I’m not saying anything against Harry and Meghan, I’m saying it was insensitive of the Royal Press Office to announce the news on International #waveoflight day. Another commented: “As much happiness as I have for Harry and Meghan, today of all days isn’t the day to announce a pregnancy. 7pm I shall be lighting my candle for all the babies, including mine, taken too soon.
As much as I love Harry and Meghan, and am delighted for their #RoyalBaby, would it have been too much trouble for the palace to do a little research? Today is #WaveOfLight day, when those like myself are remembering #babyloss. A little sensitivity wouldn’t go amiss,” said a third.
However, Kym Marsh, who also lit a candle on the day to remember her son, Archie, who was born 18 weeks premature and died minutes after, defended Meghan, 37, and Prince Harry’s decision.
It’s a nice way of remembering the babies that were taken from us too soon. Kym continued: “Some people said that it was insensitive of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to announce their pregnancy on that day. I don’t think it was insensitive – a baby is a gift and everybody should see it that way.”
The soap star said not being happy for the royal couple would be “wrong”. To be unhappy for someone having a baby would be wrong, considering we know the heartache of losing something so precious,” she said.
