Brothers Andrew, 22, and Daniel Frankish, 19, received just a 21 week sentence, suspended for two years and a tagged curfew for six months, when they appeared at Hartlepool Magistrates last week. Tragically the bulldog, named baby, had to be put down three months after the abse after she lost the use of her hind legs.

But their sentences have been met with anger on social media and now an online petition has been launched calling on David Cameron to review their sentences. The petition on change.org has already reached over 62,000 signatures closing in on its target of 75,000.

Petitions which reach 100,000 signatures are generally raised in Parliament. Petition organiser, Alex Richardson-Lee, 24, explained that it was the sheer brutality of the video, that shows the men torturing their pet bulldog, Baby, that drove him to demand for a change in their punishment. Mr Richardson-Lee, a military medic from Aylesbury, Bucks., said: These boys are clearly enjoying what they are doing to this puppy.

The bulldog was obviously terrified and she couldn’t fight back. It just really angered me and I thought, I can’t let this sit. The footage is horrifying and the RSPCA inspector involved in the case said it was one of the most harrowing cases she had ever dealt with. It really riled me.

A number of mobile phone clips, filmed by the younger man, show Andrew picking the bulldog up at the top of some wooden stairs before repeatedly throwing her down them. On one occasion he lifts her high over his head. All the while the men can be heard laughing hysterically. Mr Richardson-Lee said: The sheer callousness of what they did is absolutely disgusting.

I’ve kept dogs in the past – I keep reptiles now – and I don’t understand how anyone could do something like this. Even if nothing comes of it, at least I won’t have sat back and done nothing. The harrowing offences did not come to light until two years after they occurred when a memory card was found on a supermarket floor.

RSPCA inspector Gemma Lynch said: The whole horrible ordeal seems to be for
his and the younger man’s entertainment, for fun.Everyone who has seen the video says it’s the most distressing thing they’ve ever seen. These are people who have seen a lot of horrible things.
