In the grand tradition of the soap battleaxe, Evelyn Plummer has fast made her mark on Coronation Street.
The character was introduced in September as the long-lost gran of much-loved character Tyrone Dobbs. Played by showbiz legend Maureen Lipman, Evelyn is certainly a woman not to be messed with. What’s the story so far with Evelyn?
Evelyn made her entrance on Corrie when Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) discovered that his mum and dad were not his real mum and dad after all. He traced his potential grandmother Evelyn Plummer through social media, but was dismayed to discover that his mum Cassandra died in South Africa some years before.
Battleaxe Evelyn initially wanted nothing to do with Tyrone, but when she lost her home and with nowhere to stay ended up at Number 9 Coronation Street with her long-lost grandson, much to his wife Fiz’s dismay.
She’s swiftly made enemies on the cobbles, including Dev Alahan after attempting to steal from the corner shop, Ken Barlow after making him lose a pub quiz, and even suggesting Father Christmas is not real to the children Hope, Ruby and Joseph.
Maureen’s impressive CV includes film roles in The Pianist, Educating Rita and Oklahoma. She has also appeared in TV series including All at Number 20, The Fugitives, Where the Heart Is and Plebs. She is also fondly remembered for her role as Beatie in the 1980s BT Adverts.
Her theatre credits include more than 25 West End productions including the award-winning Oklahoma with Hugh Jackman, and her one woman show, Up For It, at Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
